The AUTODIN "Football Pennant"

Football Pennant

Submitted by Russell "Russ" MacPherson, PhD., Florida -  04 July, 1999
To: WUALP webmaster

The picture you posted today from Max Daniel in People Album 2, Slide 19 brings back a lot of memories. However, the year had to be prior to 1979 because that was when I left WU. Probably the year before, i.e., 1978.  Also, see the "Football Pennant" in the background?

There is a story behind the Pennants being made. We were in a time that AUTODIN II was splitting the organization. In an attempt to bring AUTODIN together I had a bunch of the
Pennants made and passed them out everywhere. The move did not work. The first time I saw one of the Pennants was in the Program Management Office. They had added "II" at the end with tape.

OKC Tornadoes

Submitted by Harpie Pettiet - Update   OKC 06 May, 1999 8:05 PM Zone?
To: WUALP webmaster

Just a quick update.

Bob Williamson talked to Dean Puckett today,  Deans house was pretty
well totaled,  They are OK and staying with his daughter.

W. Bill Thee has checked in with one of the Centers, they are OK.
Im sure his house was pretty much leveled.

The area by Thees house was terrible,  trees that were 40-50 ft tall
and two feet in diameter were stripped of their limbs, may have been
ten feet tall and the bark was sucked off.  What had beem homes were
just piles of wood and brick, not a wall or chimney standing, no trees
over a few feet tall.

The chain link fence around the North West side of Tinker picked
up so much debrish that it too was leveled.. The Horse Barn was gone,
as a marker, it was on the far northwest corner of tinker.

Bill Savering et al,

I have a message out to Harpie Pettiet and Don Robison
in Oklahoma area. They are the only Oklahoma contacts I
have with Email addresses. Also, Don Robison is one who
requested his name be removed from our AUTODIN group
mailing lists not too long ago, so I'm not sure if Don
will respond.

Webmaster, WUALP,

That's greaat news about Willie West, i.e. no damage, just loss of electricity.   Maybe if he has a computer he can relay information regarding other WU Autodiner's in that mess down there in Oklahoma City..

I hope we didn't lose anyone.

Bill Savering
P.S. Do you have an e-mail address for Willie??

webmaster note: Willie currently does not have a computer. Lanny Bloomer working on him via LD telco to join the group!

UPDATE - Willie West is now living in a Nursing home in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. We will try to get a snail mail address and telephone number for Willie for those Autodiners who may want to send a card and/or letters. We know Willie would appreciate the gesture, and any kind of   communications - 02 Dec 2000

Let us all know, what, if anything, you find out about the destruction down
there (Midwest City, Del City), I bet it'll be awhile before we really get any
word out of that area.

From what we can see of the destruction, communications are going to be
wanting for some time to come.

I hope we can get through and get some answers soon, but I fear its going to
take awhile.

Andrews ASC final "Death Knell"

Reported by: Tim Tierney, Maryland, 14 May, 1999  2:44 AM EDT

tim tierney says;

The end of the second week of the shut down  consisted of the de-classification of all equipment and de-certification of the switching center as a high security site. I will have some pictures to post on the AUTODIN System site. All equuipment that needed de-classifaction is complete. official de-certification will take place Friday after which the contractors can come in and assist with the final death knell to Andrews. I suspect two weeks should get 90% of the remaining.

pictures to post on the autodin system site (WUALP). It is sort of a
"downer" seeing 35 years of technology go to the "dump".

Completion of the tasks at the end of next week will allow outside
contractors to assist in the continuing demolition andrews as an AUTODIN
site. i can now understand the feelings of the people involved in the
closing of previous AUTODIN sites. oh well ...

Guess you can npw post ... Andrews ASC last gasp was at 20:03 ... patient went with head held high ...
McClellan sent me a message which i will pass to WUALP webmaster if it is appropriate.

I hope the scanner is able to re-construct so it can be posted on WUALP. It should be close to the last message received at Andrews from McClellan trunk.

"It was a long exciting haul and wouldn't change any moment of it. I suspect it may be a little hard as I have seen it grow from CDP/RCA to what it came to be.

The General that gave the losing speech Thursday said he knows of no system, bar none, that has maintained a 99.9% efficiency standard. That should make Russ MacPherson shine up a smile as he was the one that introduced that goal and standard."

Side Bar: I'm  unable to f ind Bill Guerin. I believe the zip is wrong or the name spelling is oncorrect, as I cannot forsee Bill hiding any place ... even if he did, he would let it be known, just to tease Tony Platt.

in response to the above message from Tim Tierney

Tim,

I agree with you whole heartedly.  A lot of people had to do with maintaining the high standards of AUTODIN (including you and me and everyone on the WUALP reading this e-mail) but I can't think of any one person, with the possible exception of Fred Schultz, who had any more to do with the standard of excellence that epitomized the AUTODIN system than my old boss RPM ... Russell P. MacPherson.

Congratulations on a job well done....Dr. Russ!!!!!! Systems will come and systems will go but I don't ever see a better system coming down the pike than the one that, with your leadership, and the help and talents of a helluva lotta other AUTODIN guys, has turned out to be one that has made an indelible mark in the annals of communications lore.  Hooray for AUTODIN!!!!

Tony
